Dull skin is skin that reflects less light, less evenly [1], usually because the surface has turned rough or dry enough to scatter what should bounce back [1][2]. When the change feels sudden, the cause is usually recent (short sleep, a dehydrated surface, a change of season); when it creeps in over years, it is mostly skin renewal slowing down. What is dull skin, exactly?
Radiance can be measured. Researchers validated an optical device that quantifies how much light skin reflects, and, measured on the forehead in a 30-woman validation, it sorted women with dull complexions from women with glowing ones [1]. Dull and glowing are real, instrument-readable states.
The mechanism is mostly surface water. The skin's outer layer needs water to mature and shed its oldest cells cleanly; when water loss climbs, shedding misfires and the visible result is dry, flaky skin [2]. A smooth, hydrated surface gives light back evenly. A rough, dry one scatters it, and scattered light reads as flat.
Why is my skin suddenly dull?
Sudden dullness tends to have a recent, ordinary cause. Four show up consistently in the research.
A short week of sleep. After sleep deprivation, forty raters judged the same ten photographed faces as having paler skin, more swollen eyes, darker under-eye circles, and more fine lines [3]. In a second study, 24 women aged 30 to 55 slept three hours for two consecutive nights; their skin showed significantly lower hydration, higher water loss, and a measurable drop in photographic brightness [4]. The chronic version reads the same way: among 60 women, good sleepers recovered their skin barrier about 30% better than poor sleepers at 72 hours after a standardized surface stress [5]. A dehydrated surface. This is the cause hiding inside most of the others. When the outer layer loses water faster than it holds it, shedding falters and the surface turns rough, tight, and flaky [2][6].
Winter air. If your skin went dull in January while nothing in your routine changed, suspect the air: cold weather and low humidity produce a general decrease in skin barrier function, leaving skin drier and more reactive [7]. Drier air means more water loss, a rougher surface, and flatter light [2][7].
Too much scrubbing. Sanding a dull face smooth backfires. Over-exfoliating leaves skin red and irritated [8], and the hydroxy-acid literature cautions against excessive, chronic use [9]. The gentler version has a real place, further down.

Is my skin dull or dehydrated?
Mostly, dull and dehydrated are one story at two intensities. The beauty aisle likes a clean split, dry skin lacking oil while dehydrated skin lacks water, but the research describes a water shortage in the outer layer: as it deepens, a complexion that looked flat starts to feel tight and turn flaky, its texture shifting from soft to rough [2][6]. Hydration and photographic brightness fell together in the sleep-restriction study [4], so moisture is the first lever to check.

Why is my skin shiny but not oily?
Shiny and oily are not the same reading. A face can reflect light while feeling tight and rough, or read shiny by noon without looking anything like radiant. Reflection alone is the wrong test, because three different surfaces reflect.
Sebum shine is excess oil sitting on the surface; the dermatology literature ties it to a greasy look and larger-looking pores [10], and the American Academy of Dermatology's plain descriptor for oily skin is shiny and greasy [8]. We formulate facial oils, so the scope matters: the concern here is a day's accumulated excess, not the few drops you press into hydrated skin in the morning. Tight, dry shine is the experience behind the question, an under-hydrated, rough surface [2][6] that still reads reflective while the comfort is gone. Why is skin duller in your 40s?
Slow dullness has a slower engine: renewal. In a classic study, the skin's outer layer took about half again as long to replace itself in older adults as in young ones, and the decline is not steady; it stays fairly flat through younger adulthood, then drops sharply after about age 50 [11]. A full renewal cycle runs about six to eight weeks [12], and with age the oldest cells stay on the surface longer.
For many women the 40s add a second shift. Around menopause the change can arrive fast, and drier skin is a common part of it [13]. Sebum output declines after menopause too [10], which is why skin that ran oily at 30 can read dull and dry at 48. None of it needs a diagnosis, and if it bothers you, a clinician is a better next step than a bigger shelf.

How do you brighten dull skin naturally?
Match the lever to the cause, and start with the free one.
Sleep first. Restriction lowered hydration and photographic brightness within two nights [4], so before buying anything for a dull week, sleep the week properly. Better chronic sleep is also associated with stronger barrier recovery [5].
Moisturize like it is the whole job. For the tight-and-flaky version it mostly is, since the dull-dry surface is a water story [2]. Moisturize immediately after any exfoliation, which is drying by nature [8]. Exfoliate gently, or not at all. Hydroxy acids have measured improvements to show in photoaged skin, including decreased roughness and discoloration [9]. The boundaries come from the same sources: exfoliation is not for everyone, the more aggressive the method the less often it should happen, and overdoing it leaves skin red and irritated [8]. On darker skin tones, aggressive exfoliation can drive dark spots, so keep it mild [8].
Since glycolic-pretreated skin tanned more under UVB in a 12-subject panel [9], daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, the level the American Academy of Dermatology recommends, stays a morning fixture [17] (not something we make). Where does a vitamin C serum fit?
After the free levers, the serum step is where an antioxidant does its work. Vitamin C is one of the skin's principal antioxidants, studied as an ingredient class for antioxidative and photoprotective effects, and it works synergistically with vitamin E; the same review notes that clinical studies of topical formulations remain limited [14]. Pure L-ascorbic acid is unstable, which is why derivative forms exist [14]; the oil-soluble ester I formulate with, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, has been studied at research concentrations as a precursor that releases vitamin C and acts as an antioxidant [15].
