A short list earns the fridge: water-based vitamin C, retinoids if you use them, preservative-light water formulas, ferment toners and essences, and the eye gels, mists, and masks people chill because cool feels good on the face. Anything with an oil phase stays at room temperature, which covers facial oils, balms, most creams, and makeup, and clay masks stay out too because cold hardens them. Cold never makes a product stronger; the most it does is slow a loss.
Which actives genuinely benefit from refrigeration?
Start with the ceiling. A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist says refrigeration does not change a product's ingredients and does not make them more or less effective, so the payoff "ends up being more about how it feels on your skin" [1]. What skincare should never be refrigerated?
The keep-out list runs longer, and cold fails these products physically: it stiffens them, splits them, or does nothing at all. Room temperature is the profession's default anyway; the American Academy of Dermatology says to keep cosmetics in a dry, clean space at room temperature, out of direct sunlight [18].

Do facial oils solidify in the fridge?
Yes, and it starts well above fridge temperature. Cold pulls the higher-melting waxes out of solution, which one dermatologist describes as the lipid chains slowing down, stacking up, and solidifying [2]. Jojoba, a base oil in several of ours, is the familiar case: the clouding begins near 50 °F, and its producer calls the change normal, harmless, and reversible at room temperature [12]. Crystals that form at or below 4 °C redissolve within about a day back at room temperature [14].
So nothing is broken. You have stiffened a perfectly good serum and bought no protection with it, which is why oils sit in the keep-out column. Heat is the direction that costs an oil something, the subject of how a hot car ages a bottle.

Should you refrigerate moisturizer?
No, and the reasons come in two stages. A cream is an emulsion, oil droplets suspended in water, and chilling one thickens it; in a lipid-rich cream, ceramides can crystallize out of solution and cetyl alcohol locks the texture into a dense mass you cannot spread [2]. FDA's shelf-life guidance puts the risk plainly: emulsions can separate [7].
Freezing is the second stage, where reversible can turn permanent. Expanding ice presses the oil droplets together until the membranes between them rupture, and the oil coalesces on thawing [15]; formulators stress-test for exactly this with freeze-thaw cycling [19]. A food fridge often runs 35 to 38 °F, which one dermatologist calls too cold for many skincare products [2][3], and skincare fridges are recommended set warmer, 40 to 60 °F [1][3]. Whether one is worth owning is its own argument, made in are skincare fridges worth it.
Already chilled something that should have stayed out?
Not much follows from it. Cloudy oil clears, a stiffened cream loosens in your hand, and one dermatologist's practical instruction is to let any chilled product warm up before applying it [2]. The one loss that does not reverse is a frozen emulsion [15], so a winter car deserves more caution than your fridge, and so does a suitcase, which is where how to pack skincare for a trip picks up.
What a fridge cannot do
What cool storage buys any product in the chill column is a slower clock from today forward, nothing more [1]. Why that makes freshness at purchase the bigger lever is argued in the case for buying it fresh, and our heat age model puts numbers on it.
Both halves of this list run through my own line, a water-based toner and several waterless oil formulas, and the toner lands in the easy column for a structural reason. Gaea's Gala, our essential-oil-free ferment toner, is water-based the whole way through: galactomyces ferment filtrate, rose distillate, niacinamide, vegetable glycerin, lactic acid, and lactobacillus ferment, with no oil phase and no emulsion to split. Chilling it does no harm, with two caveats: its glycerin turns thicker when cold [2], so warm a few drops in your hand, and its niacinamide does not need refrigeration [2]. The ferments are extracts of what the fermentation produced, with no living culture to keep alive [10], so cold slows ordinary chemistry and nothing more; what galactomyces ferment does for skin is a story of its own. Every bottle is made fresh in small weekly batches and kept refrigerated at about 4 °C in the studio from the day it is formulated; at home, refrigerate after opening for best freshness.
