Have you ever noticed your skin looks better after a day playing in the ocean? You’re not sea-ing things; saltwater does have some potential benefits for acne!
But unfortunately, it’s not as simple as heading to the beach to cure your breakouts. Learn all about how saltwater affects your skin below.
Yes and no.
Let’s start by exploring the reasons that you may see some improvement in your skin when you’ve been swimming in saltwater.
Saltwater can help to exfoliate your skin. Sloughing away dead skin cells can reveal a smoother complexion and help to reduce the pore clogging that contributes to breakouts.
Saltwater can help to get the gunk out of your pores. Salt has the potential to draw out oil, which means any sebum that’s stuck deep in your pores may finally find its way out of your skin.
Saltwater can help deflate pimples. Because salt has a drying effect, it can help to get some of the oil out of your skin and deflate particularly aggressive pimples.
Playing in the ocean reduces stress. Just like any active/outdoor activity, playing in the ocean is a great stress reliever. And while stress doesn’t cause acne, it can exacerbate other factors that do cause acne. So we recommend combatting stress as often as possible!
Unfortunately, there are just as many reasons not to try and use saltwater to cure your acne. Here are a few:
Most studies only look at magnesium-rich saltwater found in The Dead Sea.While there have been some studies confirming the efficacy of saltwater for skin health, the majority of them examined the effect of saltwater specifically from The Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is uniquely rich in healing magnesium, unlike the water at your local beach. So you’re not likely to see the same positive effects when you take a swim. This is doubly true if you’re trying to mix up a saltwater solution at home.
Saltwater won’t heal underlying issues. The reality is that while saltwater may dry out your existing pimples, it’s not likely to stop new ones from popping up. You’ll need to get to the source of whatever is causing your acne, weather that’s a hormonal issue, diet choice, skincare mistake, or something else, to truly see progress.
Saltwater you mix up at home is not the same as ocean water. Unfortunately, any small benefits you may see from water at the beach will probably be nonexistent in a saltwater solution you mix up at home. (This is because the concentration, mineralization and composition of the two solutions will be different.)
While saltwater is antimicrobial, it’s not strong enough to kill acne. We wish it weren’t true!
Both saltwater and acneic skin have a similar alkaline pH. So any rumors you’ve heard about saltwater balancing the pH of your skin simply aren’t true.
Rubbing salt crystals directly onto your skin can damage it. Just in case you thought exfoliating with salt might be a good idea, think again. Salt crystals can damage your skin barrier and cause micro-tears, scarring and more. You’ve been warned!
Saltwater can dry out your skin too much. While a little saltwater can be helpful for drying out pimples, too much will leave you with a face full of dry skin. Not cute.
As a Florida-born company, we are all about the healing powers of the beach. But for the most part, we have to acknowledge the ocean is a balm for your spirit, not your skin.
It’s important to choose skincare that’s gentle and actually effective for your skin, especially when you’re battling acne, and saltwater simply isn’t that.
However, if you’d still like to opt for something all natural, you’re in luck. Our 100% natural, botanical-rich skincare line is sourced straight from nature, and proven to fight inflammation and acne without damaging skin. Get started with our 4-Step System today.

I tried Wild Ice after a friend recommended it and I asked her what she uses because her skin looks amazing! So far, I LOVE the products! They feel, smell and work fantastic!
This is a lovely cream—wonderfully soothing and hydrating. It is a winner!—And makes my skin feel soft and look dewy. Love all the products from Wild Ice!
I’ve been using Cryo-C for about a month. To my thinking, my skin has been looking less splotchy and more luminous! I think my skin might be getting addicted to this stuff!
I am so glad I found you. Thank you for making such awesome products!!!
Do you happen to sell travel sets?
I really love all the products I’m using from Wild Ice. After about 3 weeks I’m seeing and feeling a difference. The cold cream therapy particularly feels cool and moisturizing. I’m so glad I gave these products a try.
Before starting this system, I had these patches of skin on my forehead that would peel off, but come right back. They are gone. Cancelled my dermatology appointment!
I never thought I would enjoy a toner before... I used to think they were rather pointless, didn't work, and difficult to apply since most the product gets absorbed in a cotton ball or hands. I've tried a handful of toners, but they left my face sticky, or didn't work that well. But Ms. Gala?? She is refreshing, crispy, clean, and actually does balance your face, to my surprise. The atomizer spray is perfect and doesn't waste product. I will definitely repurchase this!
Wild Ice has made me relearn what skincare is: I've exited the world of low-performance, filler packed products and entered the world of these thoughtfully made creations that truly care for my skin.
DBT Baba Yaga my favorite of the line! It's just what my skin needed. The consistency is delightful, my skin feels soothed the entire day, and I've noticed an improvement in the texture and feel of my skin. The dispenser is a little forceful but I've learned how to use it better.
I've (25 y/o) used this for about three weeks and have noticed a real difference. When looking at other products, always thought "brightness" and vit-C products were about making your skin lighter, and removed dark spots. Sounds great, but never seemed significant to me... But then I tried the Cryo-C and finally understand how it works!! I noticed results after the three week mark. My skin looks and feels much fresher with no congestion - that's the best way I can describe it! Totally worth it and it makes me happy. :-) I wear this only at night before bed and it feels so nice and lightweight. I personally really love the smell as well!
Love this cleanser! Have been using it for almost a year now. Can be used for oily or dry skin too. So glad I made the switch to all wild ice products.
Thank you sweet Mila. I love your products so MUCH!!! Hope to see you soon at the Rosemary farmers market!! Much LOVE!
This is my 2nd order….I did try another product and my face and skin are not as good as when I used Wild Ice!! You can truly tell a difference!! I’m 60 years old and love how this makes my skin look and feel!!!
The BMeltee cleanser is very mild, but my face has benefited from using it as part of my ritual. And for Gaeas Gala, I never used a toner before. At least consistently. From the positive reaction of my skin, it is definitely part of my ritual. I can’t say enough great things about CryoC either! When I first applied it, it seems like orange colored bio oil. But talk about my skin drinking it up instead it looking like my face is an oil well site! My complexion has become dewy! insofar as the Baba Yaga cream, which is a must, I’ve only had one other moisturizer beneficially affect my skin and that moisturizer comes with a pricey price tag. All in all, I’m pleased with my ritual of the products, my skin loves it, and I will definitely be a long time customer! 5 stars! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I have been using the whole Wild Ice facial cleansing system for a couple of years. I get compliments on my skin routinely. The products have made an incredible difference in my skin. The products smell and feel wonderful.
