What does made-fresh, small-batch skincare mean?
A batch is one mixing of a formula. Small-batch, made-fresh means a maker blends smaller quantities more often, so less time passes between the day a product is formulated and the day it lands on your skin. The reason that gap matters is easy to miss: an active's clock starts the day it is mixed, well before you buy it.
Degradation follows first-order kinetics, meaning an active loses a set fraction of whatever is left each day, at a pace the conditions decide [1][2]. The biggest lever on that pace is temperature: the warmer a formula sits, the faster it fades, a relationship physical chemists capture in the Arrhenius equation [3]. So elapsed time and accumulated heat govern how much active is still there, whatever the purchase date. Does stockpiling vitamin C shorten its shelf life?
Yes, in potency. Vitamin C is the clearest case, because it is reactive by design and fades on a schedule you can measure. In one stability study, pure vitamin C dissolved in water carried a shelf life of about 15 days at room temperature, the point at which it had lost roughly 10 percent of its strength [1]. Formulate the same vitamin C into a cream with far less water, and that figure stretched to around 208 days, a number the same authors projected back to room temperature from samples they had held warm at 37°C and 45°C [1]. The decay is continuous and heat-driven throughout [2], so a second bottle in the cabinet loses strength before you ever open it.
None of that makes a hoarded bottle unsafe. It makes it a weaker deal, since you paid for an active that is no longer all there. The effect also depends on the form. That 15-day figure is for pure L-ascorbic acid, the least stable form, and the one our Cryo-C serum deliberately does not use. Cryo-C carries an oil-soluble vitamin C ester, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, which is steadier in the bottle than free L-ascorbic acid, though the published work on that ester found it degrades quickly under oxidative stress, so it is no exception to the clock [4]. Longer if you store it well, which matters more than the date on the box. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is direct about this: no U.S. law requires a cosmetic to carry an expiration date at all, and how long one keeps varies with the type of product, how it is used, and how it is stored [9]. Temperature changes, sunlight, and air sit on the agency's own list of what shifts a product's color, texture, and smell [9]. So a printed date is an estimate made by the maker, and the conditions your bottle actually lived through decide whether it holds.
Cool and dark is what stretches it. Held at 10°C in the dark, one polyunsaturated seed oil was still barely oxidized at 150 days; its twin at 25°C in diffused light was several times further along on the standard oxidation marker [6]. Warmth drives that gap, roughly doubling the oxidation rate for every 10°C, with oxygen and light pushing the same way [5]. The practical version is ordinary housekeeping: keep a product cool, dark, and closed, and buy the size you will use up.
Which cool is the right cool depends on the formula. Water-based ones, a toner or a cleanser or a peptide serum, do best refrigerated once they are open. Waterless oils and rich creams, Cryo-C and D.B.T.
