What Does Galactomyces Do For Skin?

Ever enjoyed a refreshing drink of sake at your favorite Japanese restaurant? If so, we’re willing to bet you weren’t thinking about what it can do for your skin. Yet it turns out that the process of making sake yields one of the most effective natural skincare products in the world. Allow us to introduce you to galactomyces!

What Is Galactomyces?

Galacta-what? This mouthful is formally known as galactomyces ferment filtrate. Also called pitera, it’s a type of filtered yeast that results from the fermentation of sake. If that grosses you out a little bit, there’s no need to worry. The filtering process that results in galactomyces means that all the icky stuff like bacteria are removed.

Legend has it that galactomyces was discovered when the hands of older sake brewers remained suspiciously smooth and youthful, despite their otherwise wrinkly appearance.

Passion for this ingredient quickly caught fire in Japan, and it’s now gaining popularity the world over. And for good reason: it works!

What Does Galactomyces Do for Skin?

It may be easier to ask what this ingredient‎‎‏‏‎ ‎doesn’t do for your skin. It’s been‏‏‎‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎‎well-studied, but you don’t need to look to the science to see results. You can see them on your own face. Here’s what you can expect with regular use of a product that contains galactomyces:

  • A stronger skin barrier that blocks out UV light and pollutants, and locks in moisture.
  • Better absorption of skincare products that you put on your face after the galactomyces.
  • Reduced sebum production, which means less acne.
  • Fewer signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Reduced hyperpigmentation and lightening of dark spots.
  • And a host of other benefits like fewer blackheads, less oily skin and smaller pores.

  • Perhaps most importantly, galactomyces is super nutrient-dense. It’s chock full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that protect and nourish your skin. (Thanks Sake!)

    Who Can Use Galactomyces?

Compared to manufactured skincare products, galactomyces is gentle on the skin and safe for just about everyone to use. It may be especially beneficial for you if you have very oily or dull-looking skin or if you would like to reduce the size of your pores. Really, it’s great for anyone who wants their skin to glow and who wants to slow the signs of aging.
